A Grounding Guide for Feeling Safe, Secure, and Stable

healing the root chakra

I had spent years in a feeling of being on a treadmill–so much furious activity, and yet never going anywhere. My background noise was a constant and low-grade anxiety. Even in the case when my account was not bad, I was worried about money. I was not connected to my own body and was weirdly jealous of people who appeared to be… solid. My doctor had no physical diagnosis, but I had the feeling that I was not flourishing.

Only when a yoga teacher said about the healing of the root chakra did a bulb light up. She said that this center of foundation energy, which is at the base of our spine, controls the most fundamental human needs namely, safety, security and survival. You may be just as I was, when blocked or out of balance: ungrounded, afraid, and strained financially.

My experience with root chakra healing was a final resort, and yet, the only most significant action I have ever taken in the creation of the life that seems to be stable and safe enough.

What the Hell is the Root Chakra?

Let us unencumber it of the mystical fluff. In most of the Eastern traditions, chakras are merely considered as energy centers in the body. Imagine them as the inside plumbing to your physical, emotional, and spiritual health. The first one is the root chakra or the Muladhara in the Sanskrit. It is what you stand on, the root system of your whole energized body.

Imagine building a house. You would not begin with the walls or with the roof, right? You would lay down a solid, stable foundation. It is that slab of concrete that is the root chakra. It is found at the bottom of your spine, around your tailbone and perineum and it is closely related to the element of the earth. It is a solid red of vivid hue. This power hub is concerning your right to be here. It provides the most basic of answers: Am I safe? Have I what I need to get along? Do I belong?

Your root chakra is balanced and free; then you experience a strong feeling of stability and security. You hope that you will be able to satisfy your most basic needs of having food, shelter, and financial security. You are aware of your body as well as being in touch with the physical world around you. You are not haunted by worry all the time as your foundation is solid.

Problems in the Areas of the Body that are “Root”: This encompasses the problem of the legs, feet, knees, bones, colon, and rectum. In my case, it was constant lower back pain and cold feet.

Low Energy and Fatigue: A general sense of tiredness or feeling of being slow or having a lack of get-up and go this has not been your get-up-and-go getting up and going.

Eating Disorder: It may take the form of overeating to be grounded or loss of appetite because of anxiety.

How To: 7 Effective Starts to healing the root chakra.

The best part with root chakra healing is that it is very much tangible. It does not require you to become a meditation expert, you just need to reconnect with the earth and your physical body. These are the practices that have totally changed my life.

Walk Barefoot on the Earth (The Ultimate Grounding)
It is the easiest and the most effective practice. It’s called “earthing.” As you touch soil, grass or sand with your bare skin, you absorb the natural electrons in the earth which are of negative polarity. The review of the literature published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health in 2015 also noted that this practice is able to alleviate inflammation, enhance sleep, and decrease stress. I began by taking only 10 minutes a day, in the morning, to walk in my backyard. The change between a panicking mind and a clear mind was near instant.

Get Moving with Yoga of the Root-Chakra.

Not every type of exercise is equal to this end. You want poses are poses that make you related to the ground and stretch your legs and feet. Sej (mountain pose) (Tadasana), warrior poses (Virabhadrasana I and II), and squatting poses (Malasana). These poses develop physical stability and this physical stability directly reflects to energetic stability. When you literally stand up in a warrior II pose, you would like to believe that you are able to stand your ground in life.

Roots to a Healthy Body.
What you eat matters. Root chakra is connected with the red food and with foods, which grow underground. Begin to eat more beets, carrots, potatoes, radishes and onions. Secondly, concentrate on high protein foods such as beans, eggs and lean meat. In my case, having a hearty stew with root vegetables was a ritual that made me feel good and safe both inside and outside.

Extend the Power of Affirmations.
What you say becomes what you are really. Your subconscious mind can be reprogrammed by repeating positive affirmations in the present tense that will make you feel safe instead of feeling fear. Look at these and repeat them every day, ideally before a mirror:

“I am safe and secure.”

I believe that the universe is going to take care of my needs.

I am rooted and here in my body.

“I belong here.”

Meditate Breath the Color Red and Your Breath.

You do not even have to meditate hours. Find a comfortable posture, make your eyes closed and shift the centers of your consciousness to the bottom of your spine. Suppose there is a red, burning ball of light there, as of swirling ruby. Each time you inhale, imagine that red light getting brighter and brighter. As you breathe, sink into the ground with it like a tree, and establish deep and strong roots to the ground. Five minutes of this may be very stabilizing.

Connect with the Color Red
The influence of color is a strong vibrational power. Wear a red outfit, a scarf, socks, or some t-shirt. Eat from a red plate. Put a crystal of red, as red jasper, garnet or hematite, on your desk or keep one in your pocket. These are the visual reminders that remind you to focus on the fortification of your foundation during the day.

Clean Your physical Environment.
What you see on the outside is what you feel on the inside. An untidy, disorganised house can have its direct effect on the sense of instability. Start small. Clean out one closet. Organize your kitchen. Settle a bill you have been dodging. Doing something practical to establish order and safety in your physical world gives a strong signal to your root chakra that says: You are safe here.

My own Turning point: Anxious to Anchored.

I must admit that I was not convinced. Walking barefoot? Talking to myself about my reflection? It felt silly. But I was desperate. I had set a 30-day challenge where I aimed to do only three activities, namely, ten minutes of earthing, five minutes of root-chakra meditation, and one-root-chakra-centered yoga pose daily.

On the first week, my feet were always cold, and then, however, they began to warm during my walks on my bare feet. By the second week, the nagging “what if” of my mind had stopped and was only whispering. The actual breakthrough was during the week three. There came an unexpected little bill in the mail. This would have plunged me into a state of panic before.

But this time I had a serenity such as I had never experienced. I thought to myself, “Ok, this is irritating but I could deal with it. I am safe.” This was evidence of healing the root chakra taking place. I had switched the default alarm in my nervous system to the alarm of presence.

The Ripple Effect: How a solid Foundation transforms it all.

Mend your foundation and all you place on it is strengthened. As my root chakra started to balance, I realized that some other aspects of my life change in miraculous ways. My relationships were also more secure as I was not in need to find security in others. My creative abilities were nurtured since I was not squandering all my power on fear. I even could make better career choices as I was working out of the place of I am enough rather than I am not enough.

The root chakra is not a quick solution, but a process of self-care and grounding. It is the day to day dedication of showing up to yourself and reminding you that you have a right to be here, to be safe, and to flourish.
