Virgil van Dijk found himself at the heart of controversy during the Netherlands’ opening World Cup group-stage match against Japan, after VAR appeared to overlook a possible foul in the buildup to his goal.
The Dutch captain was one of three Liverpool players in the starting lineup, alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo, as the Netherlands began their campaign as group favorites. However, with Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia also in the mix, progression to the knockout stage was far from guaranteed.
Japan proved to be a tough opponent early on, maintaining a disciplined defensive structure that limited clear chances for Ronald Koeman’s side. The breakthrough finally came in the 51st minute when Van Dijk rose to meet a cross in the box. His powerful header struck the post and crossed the line, giving the Netherlands a crucial lead.
Despite the goal, controversy quickly followed. Japanese players protested, claiming Van Dijk had pushed his marker before making contact with the ball. However, VAR officials chose not to review the potential foul and instead only checked for offside in the buildup—much to the frustration of Japan’s head coach Hajime Moriyasu.
The goal shifted momentum in the game, leading to a more open contest with three additional goals scored after the opener. Van Dijk’s finish earned widespread praise from pundits. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson described it as a “brilliant header” on BBC Radio 5 Live, highlighting the defender’s technique and precision.
Similarly, former Scotland striker Ally McCoist commended the effort on ITV, calling it a “beautiful goal” and praising the quality of the delivery that led to the finish.
However, the Netherlands were unable to maintain their advantage, conceding twice and settling for a 2-2 draw. The result left some disappointment, particularly as they failed to secure a clean sheet.
Looking ahead, the Dutch side will face Sweden next, followed by a decisive match against Tunisia as they aim to secure qualification for the knockout rounds. With his leadership and presence, Van Dijk is expected to play a key role in determining how far the Netherlands can go in the tournament.
